SPEX 2013 – Day 3

In spite of an inauspicious start (cats and dogs raining down from the sky…), today went very well. The topsoil has now been stripped across the whole trench and about two thirds of it has now been cleaned. For those new to archaeology, cleaning mud may sound unlikely, if not impossible, but let me assure that nothing looks nicer than an area of freshly-trowelled mud!

The cleaning has revealed more of the wall that was first spotted on Day 1, as well as two other walls, large rubble spreads and some areas of pitched stone that may have functioned as post pads. Some nice finds have also come up, including pottery with barbotine decoration (raised dots) and today’s star find: a Roman belt buckle.
